Design and Evaluation of a QoS Routing Protocol for Reservation-based Networks

Compared to other networks, designing a QoS routing protocol in MANETs is much more complex. Besides problems such as the exposed and hidden terminal problems that can occur in most wireless networks, the mobility of the nodes results in more unpredictable connection breakups or interferences and therefore causes even more data collisions or QoS violations. In order to resolve these problems, a QoS routing protocol is developed in this thesis, which is based on MacZ and BBRP (Black Burst Routing Protocol). This routing protocol supports 2 QoS constraints simultaneously: bandwidth and delay. In this routing protocol, the route discovery is performed in a contention-based period of medium, while the data is transferred in a contention-free period. To the best of our knowledge, this is quite different from most routing protocols, which based only on one kind of medium. This routing protocol is tightly interlocked with BBRP and integrates the functions for resource reservation and QoS maintenance. The route discovery phase includes two sub-phases, route request and route reply phase. The reservation of resource is done during the route discovery phase. Some route maintenance mechanisms are deployed in this routing protocol including QoS violation detection and QoS route recovery.
