A variety of methods, techniques, and tools for requirements engineering, both informal and formal, are being advocated in industry and academia. However, it is often difficult for a software engineer to assess the quality or suitability of a particular approach with respect to a given problem he wants to solve. The objective of this J.UCS Special Issue is to make existing requirement engineering approaches better comparable, and to highlight their strengths and shortcomings. To achieve this objective, an informal problem description of a light control system has been selected to serve as a common basis. Papers are solicited that demonstrate the application of requirements engineering methods, techniques, or tools to this problem description. In addition, further documentation such as prototypes, designs, implementations, or model-checked specifications may be developed.
The informal problem description of the light control system, as provided by a customer, is made available at http://vs.informatik.uni-kl.de/activities/recs/problem. Authors should use this informal description as a starting point, when demonstrating the application of their methods, techniques, or tools. To make the case study more realistic, authors may ask questions to the customer. These questions and the answers by the customer will be made available to all authors. Please visit http://vs.informatik.uni-kl.de/activities/recs/ for all related information, including the informal problem description, the call for papers, links, contacts, and the current status of customer feedback.
J.UCS - the Journal for Universal Computer Science - is a high-quality, monthly publication of Springer Publishing Company that deals with all aspects of computer science. J.UCS is published electronically, and can be supplemented with further electronic material such as html- documents. Authors are solicited to take advantage of this option by submitting, in addition to their papers, accompanying documentation in electronic form. This may, for instance, include full requirement specifications in html-format with hyperlinks.
Please note that submissions will only be considered, if they address the light control system, and if they report results of requirements engineering steps.

Submission Guidelines
Paper submissions should be in Adobe PostScript format viewable using ghostview, and should be sent electronically to gotzhein@informatik.uni-kl.de. The length of a paper should not exceed 25 pages.
Final versions must be formatted according to the J.UCS style guide for authors, please consult http://www.jucs.org/_submit/. Any questions on this style guide should be mailed directly to jucs_ref@iicm.edu.
